Eric Vogel (1907–1996) was a Hungarian poster artist, stage and costume designer, graphic designer, illustrator and painter whose career was closely tied to the theatre and entertainment world. His posters, many of them for theatres, cabarets, restaurants, revues and circuses, are characterised by bold Art Deco compositions, strong drawing and a theatrical sense of movement. He designed around 80 known posters, although the actual number may be higher, and continued producing them from the 1920s into the 1970s.

Born Imre Vogel in Budapest in 1907, he studied painting with Adolf Fényes and Lipót Herman and began working as an illustrator for Színházi Élet in 1920. Between 1925 and 1927, he studied interior design at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he became familiar with theatre and film production. From 1927, he designed sets and costumes for the Budapest Operetta Theatre, the Capital Artists' Theatre and the Hungarian Theatre. By the 1930s, he was working regularly for Budapest's King Theatre and City Theatre, designing operettas, musical productions and entertainment shows. He also created posters and visual material for venues including the Moulin Rouge, Parisien Grill and Maxim Varieté.

Vogel's theatre work became the foundation of a career that extended well beyond poster design. He created sets and costumes for more than 400 productions, worked for theatres throughout Hungary and designed for Hungarian Television, as well as theatres in Berlin and Paris. His strong understanding of the stage and the human body informed his drawings and paintings, while his energetic, often humorous approach gave his commercial work a recognisable character. From the 1950s onward, he consistently signed his work simply “eric.”

His career was interrupted by the Second World War. From 1942 he was forced to serve in labour camps, but escaped and eventually worked at a theatre in Nagyvárad. He later worked for the newspaper Scînteia in Bucharest before returning to Hungary in 1945. From 1948, he was associated with the Budapest Operetta Theatre and went on to work with numerous Hungarian theatres and entertainment venues. He also designed costumes for the Olympic silver medalist and world champion ice-dancing pair Krisztina Regőczy and András Sallay, and exhibited his drawings and paintings in Hungary and internationally, including in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Paris and New York.

In 1996, Vogel designed the sets and costumes for Csárdáskirálynő in Szolnok but died before the production's premiere. He was buried at Farkasrét Cemetery in Budapest. In 2007, he was named an honorary citizen of Erzsébetváros, the Budapest district where he was born.
