Evgeny Iosifovich Chubarov was a Russian painter, graphic artist, and sculptor whose career developed largely outside the official artistic trends of the Soviet Union. Born in the village of Nizhnee Bobino in Bashkortostan, he developed an interest in drawing as a child. He initially trained in applied arts, studying engraving and decorative metalwork at the Zlatoust School of Applied Arts before serving in the Soviet Navy.

After completing his military service, Chubarov moved through several artistic centres, including Saratov and Sergiev Posad, where he worked in the studio of sculptor Dmitry Tsaplin. In the early 1960s he gained recognition when his paintings March and Factory Landscape were included in exhibitions of young artists in Moscow. During this period, he developed a distinctive figurative language influenced by Russian modernism, expressionism, and the psychological intensity of artists such as Pavel Filonov and Boris Grigoriev.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Chubarov explored themes of human existence, sexuality, and physical vulnerability. His paintings and drawings often depicted distorted bodies and fragmented figures, moving away from traditional representation towards increasingly complex and emotional compositions. In the 1970s and 1980s, he created large-scale multi-figure drawings in ink on paper, filling the surface with densely packed faces and bodies. These works reflected both personal expression and a broader response to the tensions of Soviet society.

In 1986, Chubarov became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Shortly afterwards, his career changed significantly when he was invited by art dealer Gary Tatintsian to move to Berlin. He later spent time in New York, where his work shifted from figurative expressionism towards abstraction. This transition resulted in a new body of layered abstract paintings, combining references to Russian icon traditions, archaic imagery, and the legacy of artists such as Kazimir Malevich.

Chubarov gained international recognition during this period, receiving a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant and exhibiting alongside major contemporary artists in Europe and the United States. After returning to Russia in the late 1990s, he continued to work from his home in Mytishchi near Moscow, where he remained connected with artists from both official and unofficial Soviet art circles.

Today, Chubarov is recognised as one of the important figures connecting late Soviet nonconformist art with the international contemporary art scene. His works are held in major collections including the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, and international collections. In 2007, his Untitled (1994) was sold at Phillips for $1.19 million, setting a record auction price for a living Russian artist at the time and confirming his growing international recognition.
