Igor Alekseevich Ivanov is a Soviet and Russian theatre designer, painter, and poster artist best known for his stage designs for opera, ballet, and drama. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he designed more than 150 productions for leading theatres across the Soviet Union and Europe, while also creating award-winning theatre posters.

Born in Leningrad in 1937, Ivanov studied at the Secondary Art School of the Repin Institute before graduating from the theatre department of the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1962 under Professor Nikolai Bobyshev. He began his career in Lithuania, working with the Russian Drama Theatre, the Youth Theatre, and the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Vilnius.

From the early 1970s, Ivanov served as Principal Designer at several of Leningrad's leading theatres, including the Akimov Comedy Theatre, the Komissarzhevskaya Drama Theatre, and the Kirov Theatre (now the Mariinsky Theatre). He designed productions of Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades, Boris Godunov, Don Pasquale, Giselle, Swan Lake, and La Bayadère, working with directors including Yuri Temirkanov, Boris Pokrovsky, and Pyotr Fomenko.

Alongside his stage work, Ivanov designed theatre posters throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His posters, created for productions at the Leningrad Comedy Theatre and Theatre of Musical Comedy, were recognised at international exhibitions, featured in collections of the year's best posters, and acquired by museums. They reflect the distinctive visual language of Soviet theatre posters, balancing bold graphic design with the practical demands of promoting state theatre productions.

Ivanov was awarded the title of Honoured Artist of Russia and received the USSR State Prize for his contribution to theatre design. His work remains an important part of Soviet stage and poster design.
