Vasily Zhuravlev was a Kazakhstani and Uzbek graphic artist, painter, sculptor and applied artist whose work was deeply shaped by the landscapes of Central Asia. His paintings and watercolours depict the steppes, foothills and villages of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, often transforming familiar landscapes into atmospheric, romantic images. He was particularly drawn to the saxaul, whose resilience and sculptural form became a recurring subject in his work.

Born in 1936 in southern Kazakhstan into a peasant family, Zhuravlev grew up in an environment that had a lasting influence on his artistic imagination. His father had fought in the Second World War, while his paternal grandfather, a Cossack officer, died during the Russian Civil War. His father, orphaned as a child, had been raised by a Kazakh family. Zhuravlev graduated from the Almaty Theatre and Art School before entering the graphic department of the Tashkent Theatre and Art Institute in 1962. While still a student, he participated in republican and All-Union exhibitions.

Zhuravlev worked across engraving, painting and watercolour, with a particular mastery of linocut and watercolour. A linocut composition exhibited at an All-Union exhibition in the 1970s was acquired by the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. He also travelled with the All-Union Group of Watercolour Artists, producing large-format works depicting northern Russia, including Taimyr and Norilsk. His strongest attachment, however, remained to the landscapes of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Steppe sunsets, moonlit nights and saxaul trees became vehicles for exploring the relationship between nature and the cosmos.

Zhuravlev also worked as a sculptor, designer, mechanic and carpenter, constructing and modifying his own tools and equipment. He was a poet as well as a visual artist, writing about Central Asian landscapes in a style influenced by Russian folk poetry and poets including Alexei Koltsov, Sergei Yesenin and Nikolai Klyuev. He died in 2005, leaving a broad body of paintings, graphic works, sculptures and applied art. His work remains represented in institutional and private collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery.
