Otto Kummert is a German graphic designer and poster artist who became one of the most important poster designers in the GDR. His work spans film, political, exhibition, and advertising posters, and helped move GDR poster design away from the illustrative film posters that had previously dominated. From 1967, he worked as part of the Ring 67 collective alongside Harry Pflaum, Rudolf Grüttner, and Horst Wendt.

Born in 1936 in Groß Mützelburg, Kummert's family was expelled from West Pomerania after the Second World War and settled in the Soviet occupation zone. He initially trained as a beekeeper before attending a teacher training seminar in Güstrow and working as a teacher in Teterow. From 1957 to 1963, he studied at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art under Klaus Wittkugel, Arno Mohr, and Werner Klemke. He then worked as studio manager at DEWAG in Berlin before becoming a freelance graphic designer in 1966.

Kummert designed a large number of film posters, as well as political and exhibition posters, logos, catalogues, and other graphic works. His approach was notably disciplined and carefully constructed rather than reliant on improvisation. With Ring 67, he and his colleagues sought new ways to make the film poster more visually attractive and artistically relevant, helping to shape the visual language of cinema in the GDR during the 1960s and 1970s.

From 1974 to 1982, Kummert was artistic director of Progress Filmverleih and later became artistic director of the publishing house for agitation and visual aids in Berlin. He also taught at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art, where he became head of the graphic design department in 1985 and professor in 1986. His work received numerous awards, including prizes in the 100 Best Posters competitions in 1967, 1968, and 1977, the Silver Medal at the International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno in 1982, and the GDR Art Prize in 1987.

After German reunification, Kummert moved to Murchin-Relzow and established a graphic design studio. He co-founded the DesignZentrum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 1993 and, with his wife Edith Kummert, founded the Anklam School of Graphic Design in 1994. In 2001, he established the European Poster Biennale of Art and Design Schools. From 2010, he stepped back from teaching to focus on his own artistic work.
