Mark Abramov was a Soviet caricaturist, graphic artist, and poster designer best known for his political cartoons and propaganda posters. For more than sixty years, he contributed illustrations to many of the Soviet Union's leading newspapers and magazines, including Krokodil, Pravda, Izvestia, and Ogonyok. Combining bold graphic design with sharp satire, he became one of the Soviet Union's leading official caricaturists and a familiar name in post-war Soviet publishing.

Born in Kharkiv in 1913, Abramov studied at the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute before pursuing a career as an artist. During the 1930s, he and his brother Oleg produced caricatures under the joint signature "MOA" for a number of newspapers and magazines. From 1932 onwards, Abramov regularly published political cartoons in many of the Soviet Union's most influential publications, establishing himself as one of the country's leading satirical illustrators.

During the Second World War, Abramov created the drawing series Combat 1943, documenting the conflict through patriotic and satirical imagery. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he produced a series of graphic albums and illustrated books that focused on international politics, anti-colonial themes, and Cold War propaganda. From the mid-1950s onwards, he also designed posters, particularly promoting Soviet agriculture and other state campaigns.

Like many official Soviet artists of his generation, Abramov's work closely reflected the political priorities of the state. In 1958, he joined the public campaign against Boris Pasternak after the writer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Doctor Zhivago. Although controversial today, the episode illustrates the political environment in which many Soviet artists worked.

Abramov received some of the Soviet Union's highest artistic honours, becoming a Merited Artist of the RSFSR in 1964 and a People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1980. He was also awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1984 for his contribution to Soviet art.

Mark Abramov died in Moscow in 1994. Today, he is remembered as one of the Soviet Union's leading political caricaturists. His cartoons, illustrations, and posters remain an important record of Soviet graphic design, combining humour, strong visual composition, and the distinctive style of official Soviet propaganda.
