Ernst Neizvestny was a Russian-American sculptor, painter, and graphic artist known for his expressive, monumental works exploring human existence, memory, and the relationship between art and power. A major figure of Soviet nonconformist art, he challenged the restrictions of Socialist Realism and became one of the most prominent artists to emerge from the Soviet Union.

Born in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) in 1925, Neizvestny grew up in a Jewish family and volunteered for the Red Army at the age of seventeen during the Second World War. He was severely wounded near the end of the war and was mistakenly declared dead, but survived. After the war, he studied at the Art Academy of Latvia in Riga, the Surikov Moscow Art Institute, and the Philosophy Department of Moscow State University.

Neizvestny's sculptures, often based on the human body, are characterised by dramatic forms, expressive movement, and powerful physicality. Working mainly in bronze and concrete, he created large-scale monuments as well as smaller sculptures and graphic works. One of his most important projects was The Tree of Life, a lifelong series exploring themes of humanity, creativity, and existence.

In 1962, Neizvestny became one of the most visible representatives of Soviet nonconformist art after confronting Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev during a visit to the famous exhibition at the Moscow Manege. Khrushchev criticised Neizvestny's work and accused him of creating unacceptable art, but Neizvestny defended artistic freedom and challenged the state's control over culture. Despite their confrontation, after Khrushchev's death his family later commissioned Neizvestny to design his grave monument.

In 1976, Neizvestny emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States, settling in New York. During the 1980s, he exhibited widely and taught at institutions including the University of Oregon and the University of California, Berkeley. His later works included monumental sculptures and projects dealing with historical memory, including The Mask of Sorrow, a 15-metre monument in Magadan dedicated to victims of Soviet repression.

Neizvestny received the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1996 and became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts in 2004. His works are held in major collections, including the Vatican Museums, and a museum dedicated to his sculptures was established in Uttersberg, Sweden.
Ernst Neizvestny died in New York in 2016.
