"Forward, to the Victory of Soviet Agriculture!" (1970s) by Vilen Surenovich Karakashev is a preparatory oil sketch created for a larger poster campaign during a period of intensive Soviet agricultural modernization. As a preliminary work, it offers rare insight into the propaganda creation process, as Soviet protocols typically mandated the destruction of such sketches after approval.
The composition centers on a dramatic pyramidal structure that rises from a foundation of brightly coloured produce to a triumphant crescendo. At its apex, a tractor-mounted agricultural worker gestures skyward, commanding the viewer's attention. Karakashev employs an unusually vibrant palette dominated by warm reds, oranges, and verdant greens, punctuated by strategic touches of cool blue that create visual rhythm throughout the piece. The fruits and vegetables are rendered in simplified, almost abstract forms, their stylized shapes forming a kaleidoscopic pattern that transforms agricultural abundance into a decorative celebration of Soviet achievement.
Each element serves both aesthetic and ideological purposes, carefully balancing artistic innovation with propaganda requirements. The upward-thrusting composition suggests progress, while the abundance of produce implies achieved prosperity under collective farming. The tractor, a recurring motif in Soviet art, represents the merging of human labour with industrial might, celebrating the triumph of modern methods over traditional farming practices. Karakashev's departure from typical Socialist Realist conventions through his use of vibrant colors and stylized forms suggests a modernization of propaganda aesthetics that mirrors the modernization of agriculture itself.
Vilen Surenovich Karakashev (b. 1935, Baku) emerged as a transformative figure in Soviet poster art after graduating from the Moscow State Academic Art Institute in 1962. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, he created numerous influential political and social posters, earning multiple "Best Poster of the Year" awards for his innovative approach. His works, now preserved in major Russian institutions including the State Museum of Political History of Russia and the Russian State Library, represent a significant bridge between traditional Soviet propaganda and more contemporary artistic sensibilities.
