"European Women's Speed Skating Championships" (1984) by I. Filippov is an original sketch, created to commemorate the championship event held in Medeo, the highest ice skaeing rink in the world, Kazakh SSR.
The composition is clean and direct. A speed skater in a blue bodysuit launches forward, captured mid-stride. The sketch was produced during a period of intense state emphasis on sport as cultural diplomacy. It reflects the USSR’s use of sport as a diplomatic and ideological tool. reinforces the state’s message: sport was a unifying force for the socialist world and a tool of Soviet soft power.
This oil-on-paper mockup—paired here with the final printed envelope and stamp—offers a rare glimpse into the Soviet postal design process. Below, elegant calligraphy marks the Premier Jour (First Day) of issue—a nod to philatelic tradition. Few such preparatory works survived, as most were destroyed after printing.
