Maria Alexandrovna Nesterova-Berzina’s "Batumi - USSR" (1936) represents a masterful confluence of Soviet propaganda and Art Deco aesthetics in service of Intourist, the USSR's state travel agency. This promotional poster emerged during a period when the Soviet Union was actively cultivating tourism to demonstrate the success of its socialist system, particularly in the Georgian SSR. The work exemplifies the complex relationship between Soviet ideological requirements and international artistic influences of the 1930s, whilst serving as an advertisement for Batumi as a sophisticated Black Sea resort destination.
The composition masterfully balances multiple symbolic elements to create an idealised vision of Soviet Georgia. The central figure, a Georgian woman in a vibrant red dress, dominates the foreground, carrying a basket overflowing with oranges. Behind her, the curving coastline of Batumi stretches into the distance, with modernist buildings nestled against the hills and palm trees framing the scene. The inclusion of a modern tourist bus in the lower portion suggests accessibility and development, whilst the deep blue sea and verdant landscape emphasise the region's natural beauty. Each element is carefully positioned to guide the viewer's eye through the scene, creating a harmonious arrangement that reinforces the poster's promotional message.
The artwork's stylistic execution demonstrates Nesterova-Berzina's sophisticated integration of Art Deco influences with Soviet artistic conventions. The colour palette is particularly striking, employing bold reds against deep maritime blues and subtropical greens. The geometric simplification of forms, characteristic of Art Deco, is evident in the treatment of the landscape and architectural elements. The artist's technical approach shows masterful control of the lithographic medium, with smooth colour gradations and precise linework creating a sense of depth and atmosphere whilst maintaining the poster's graphic impact. This careful balance of naturalistic representation and modernist abstraction exemplifies the artistic possibilities available within the constraints of Soviet commercial art of the period.
Maria Alexandrovna Nesterova-Berzina (1897-1965) stands as one of the most significant Soviet poster artists of her generation. Born in Samarkand, she developed a distinctive style that successfully merged Soviet propaganda requirements with international modernist trends. Her work for Intourist represents the pinnacle of her artistic achievement, demonstrating her ability to create visually striking images that functioned effectively as both art and advertisement. Her posters are now held in numerous prestigious institutions, including the Russian State Library and the State Museum of Political History of Russia, cementing her legacy as a key figure in early Soviet visual culture. The "Batumi" poster, in particular, remains one of her most celebrated works, exemplifying her sophisticated integration of artistic innovation with political messaging.
