"Knowledge for All" (1972) by Vilen Surenovich Karakashev reflects the USSR's expansion of soft power across the Global South through educational and cultural programs. Karakashev created a poster that promoted both domestic literacy and international solidarity at a time when education and political doctrine had become a key battleground in the ideological struggle between East and West.
The composition is anchored by a central metaphorical motif: an open book whose pages transform into radiating sunbeams against a vibrant red background. Three stylized faces - in yellow, white, and purple - dominate the upper portion, while reaching hands of different hues stretch upward from below. Their simplified forms reflect modernist influence while their varied colors symbolize different ethnicities. Karakashev's color palette progresses from deep purples through dramatic reds to brilliant yellows, creating a sense of ascending enlightenment.
Beyond its overt message of educational access, the poster speaks to deeper themes of cultural exchange and power dynamics in the Cold War era. The stylized faces, representing Asian, European, and African features, reflect the USSR's cultivation of relationships with newly independent nations through educational programs and university exchanges. The radiating book symbolizes not just literacy but the spread of Soviet influence through knowledge transfer, while the upward-reaching hands suggest both liberation through education and the embrace of Soviet leadership in the developing world.
