Mikhail Solomonovich Bitny’s "Products for Children - Big Selection" (1966) is a vibrant and playful advertisement for children’s clothing and footwear, created using paper applique, watercolor, and featured in Krokodil magazine, issue No. 6, 1966. This piece exemplifies Soviet-era commercial art, which blended aesthetic appeal with practical messaging to resonate with family audiences.
The composition is dominated by oversized shoes and boots, creatively reimagined as swings and play structures for children. Each child depicted in the artwork is cheerful and animated, their bright smiles and playful poses capturing the innocence and joy of childhood. The bold Russian text, “БОЛЬШОЙ ВЫБОР” (“Big Selection”), emphasizes the variety of products available, while the phrase “ТОВАРОВ ДЛЯ ДЕТЕЙ” (“Products for Children”) anchors the advertisement’s purpose. The color palette of muted greens, yellows, and reds is both warm and inviting, a hallmark of mid-century Soviet graphic design.
Bitny’s mastery of illustration and design shines through in this work, with its combination of whimsy and clarity. The children’s exaggerated, expressive features convey a sense of delight, drawing viewers’ attention to the quality and appeal of the products. The use of shoes as playful settings reflects Bitny’s ability to merge practicality with imagination, transforming everyday items into sources of wonder. This playful visual language was particularly effective in appealing to both children and their parents, ensuring the advertisement’s success.
